Review Wednesday - Book Review "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown

These are my own personal thoughts on this book. Please do add you comments as it is nice to know what others thought of this book.

The basic story line is about a Harvard Professor, called Robert Langdon. He gets called to the Louvre Museum in Paris, late one night whilst there on business. The curator of the museum has been murdered inside the museum. Alongside the body, police have found some puzzling cryptic messages left by the curator, moments before he died.

Langdon hooks up with a French cryptologist called Sophie Neveau. They then embark on a hunt in Paris and abroad to find the meaning to these messages. The messages lead them to the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, and the hidden messages within his work. The hidden messages within the Da Vinci paintings lead them further into mystery.

They must solve these layered messages and bizarre riddles so that an important and amazing historical truth with vanish forever.

It is a tale of many twists and turns, and a lot of factual information throughout. The two main opposing forces in the story are by far the most interesting. Its is stated at the front that the are both real organizations. They are:

The Priory of Sion - a European secret society founded in 1099. In 1975 Paris's Bibliotheque national discovered parchments known as Les Dossiers Secrets, identifying numerous members of the Priory of Sion, including Sir Isaac Newton, Sandro Botticelli, Victor Hugo and Da Vinci.

The Vatican prelature known as Opus Dei is a deeply devout Catholic sect that has been the topic of recent controversy due to reports of brain washing, coercion and a dangerous practise known as 'corporal mortification'.

It is a very interesting read, and one I highly recommend. I read the whole thing in one night as it was too hard to put down.
