Steampunk the Thames Festival 11 - 13 November 2016

Steampunk the Thames Festival is here again.

Steampunk The Thames is run by a voluntary organisation, Steampunk The Thames Inc., and its committee of ten, who bring to the festival a wealth of talent, fresh ideas and a passion to “art up Thames”.

The organisers have created this festival to celebrate Thames’ own blend of art, heritage, and culture; inspire and stimulate local talent; showcase local art and creativity and attract visitors to town to join them in having a rollicking good time.

The objectives of the organisation are:

To explore the Victorian, engineering, industrial, scientific and technological heritage and future of Thames through the arts.
To encourage the public expression of steampunk and associated genres, encompassing many different artistic media and art forms.
Support and encourage education, mentoring and training opportunities for arts within the community.
Support, promote and expose art and artists of any and every description for the benefit of the community and members of the Society.
To strengthen and build community through steampunk themed initiatives and projects.

They have come together because they believe that the arts matter; that their practice can transform our lives and promote our community as a wonderful place to live, work, play and visit.

Bodies of Strange Creatures Found in a London Basement - The Truth Behind The Viral Story.

The original article published on Designyoutrust stated that "in 1960 in London at the time of clearing the site for construction of a new residential neighborhood, the old long-abandoned mansion belonged to Thomas Theodore Merlin was sent for demolition".

It went on to say "in the basement of the home, builders have discovered several thousand small wooden boxes tightly sealed. Imagine their surprise when they began to find the bodies of strange mythical creatures, which seemed to have been living only in fairy tales".

A bit of digging uncovered that while these fantastical creatures are awesome, they are in fact "a fictional invention of Alex CF, a London-based illustrator, writer, and sculptor with a fantastically warped imagination and a talent for the obscure. And now you can add ‘marketing specialist’ to the list, as this ‘true facts’ approach worked wonderfully promoting his Merrylin Cryptid Museum". Source: DeMilked.

The Art of Guy Denning

Guy Denning was born in North Somerset in 1965. He has been obsessed with visual art since childhood and started painting in oils at the age of eleven after receiving a set of old paints from a relative that had grown bored with them.

Through the 1980s he was repeatedly unsuccessful in his applications to study painting at degree level but continued painting whilst studying art history with the Open University and learning painting technique from older painters he knew in the west of England.

From 1992, he exhibited across Britain. Since 2007 he has also exhibited in the United States of America, Germany, Italy and France. His paintings have been shown in numerous solo and mixed exhibitions. Notable solo shows include 'Purgatorio' at Brooklynite Gallery New York, 'Inferno' at MAGI'900 Bologna and 'Behemoth' at St Martin in the Fields London.

His work is held in several public collections, including the Politics Department of Bristol University, the Political Science Department at Galway University and the MAGI'900 Museum of Contemporary Art, Bologna.

He has also been invited to work on a variety of community urban art projects and has developed a distinctive style that builds images from stencilled text.
In 2007 he moved to Finistere in France where he continues to work towards future exhibitions.

Annie’s creative abilities were evident at a very you age.

Over the years she developed a passion for multi media and has worked in radio from the age of 14.

Annie is the Owner and Managing Directrix of Twisted Radio.

She writes posts about art and unusual things of interest to her blog - www.twistedmistressnz.blogspot.co.nz. You can also tune into Twisted Radio via the blog.

She has been involved in theatre at school and with her brother’s production troupe.

Annie’s series “Steampunk Mandalas” began one evening when the need to find an outlet and activity to create a Zen head space met with a love of colouring in, steampunk.

Steam Punking Up the Thames Arts Festival

Thames throws its doors wide open to welcome you to our annual arty party, the Thames Arts Festival 21 November to 7 December 2014.

Get yourself caught up in the steam punk invasion of our old gold rush town. Fuse Victoriana with SciFi; industrial reality with fantasy and take a journey with us to days of future passed.

With three weekends and two weeks to show off our very arty best, we have lots of treats in store for steam punkers and fine art aficionados alike. This is our community art at its very off beat best.

What a great way to celebrate year end with some good old-fashioned Thames-town hospitality. So do come out and join in the fun.

Alan Aldridge - "The Man with the Kaleidoscope Eyes"

Alan Aldridge - Artist, Graphic Designer and Illustrator.

He is possibly best known, however, for the picture book The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper Feast (1973), a series of illustrations of anthropomorphic insects and other creatures, which he created in collaboration with William Plomer, who wrote the accompanying verses. This was based on William Roscoe's poem of the same name, but was inspired when Aldridge read that John Tenniel had told Lewis Carroll it was impossible to draw a wasp in a wig.

He has in one form or another always been creating, designing but it was not untill late in his life, after life saving surgery, Davis-Oakley discovered photography as part of his mental and emotional rehabilitation.
