Subtly adding the fact that you have a boyfriend into the conversation in order to deter anyone who is potentially interested.
The first time this happens is the boyfriend drop.
Also can be used in describing this event by the other person who was interested.

this is the stupidest tactic ever because its so blatant, everyone knows what your doing no matter how subtle it is. I've known girls to do this even when none of the guys involved in the conversation would touch her with a ten thousand foot pole.

Though admittedly I have also seen the last scenario you describe and wonder if they said boyfriend is in fact real or jus an imaginary person they are using to try and generate interest.
